You can look below at the age of your child and see reasons when it would be a good idea to reach out to a speech therapist for an assessment.
By 12 months:
If your child is not using a variety of sounds
If your child is not trying to imitate words or sounds
If your child is not using gestures like waving, pointing, clapping
If your child is not saying their first word

By 18 months:
If your child is not using at least 10 words
If your child is not imitating and learning new words frequently
If your child is not following 1-step directions

By 24 months:
If your child is not using at least 50 words
If your child is not using 2-word phrases (e.g. hi mama, more milk)
If your child is not following 2-step directions

By 3 years:
If your child is not using a t least 250 words
If your child is not sing 4-5 word sentences consistently
If your child is not using pronouns, locations words, ING ending and "NOT"
If your child is not understood at least 75% of the time
If your child is not using the following sounds: M, N, ING, P, B, T, D, Y, W, H, F, K, G

By 4 years:
If your child is not using complete sentences
If your child is not able to ask and answer questions
If your child is not able to have a back and forth conversation
If your child is not understood at least 90% of the time
If your child is not using the following sounds: M, N, ING, P, B, T, D, Y, W, H, F, K, G, V, S, Z, L, SH, CH, J

By 5 years:
If your child is not able to re-tell a short story and describe what happened
If your child is not able to ask and answer questions
If your child is not able to have a back and forth conversation
If your child is not understood 100% of the time
If your child is not using the following sounds: M, N, ING, P, B, T, D, Y, W, H, F, K, G, V, S, Z, L, SH, CH, J, TH, ZH, R

At any age:
If you as the parent are concerned about their speech and language!
It's always best to trust your gut as a parent! And better to "check and see" instead of "wait and see".
